Two Epic Engagment Locations near Denver
Short drive, big drama. If you want max views with minimal logistics, these two trailheads deliver.
Chief Mountain (near Idaho Springs)
Vibe: Alpine summit without a killer hike, 360° panoramas, evergreen ridgelines, and sunrise/sunset glow
Hike (AllTrails): ~2.8–3.0 mi out-and-back, ~1,000 ft gain, moderate
Season/Crowds: Gorgeous year-round, but winter can be windy up top and summer weekends can get crowded up top
Why it’s perfect: The hike, while a little steep, is short for such amazing views. There are several good lookout spots along the way and the hike out isn’t bad even if its after dark!
Pro tip: Pack layers—even on bluebird days, the summit breeze can be quite chilly.
Lake Isabelle (Brainard Lake Recreation Area, near Ward)
Vibe: Dreamy alpine lakes, creek crossings, wildflower meadows, and very pointy mountains
Hike (AllTrails): Standard loop ~4.9 mi, ~475 ft gain, moderate. In winter, the gate closure adds a lot of milage. “Winter Route” ~10.5 mi with snowshoes.
Permit: During peak months, timed-entry parking reservations are required for Brainard Lake.
Season/Crowds: Prime late June–September; July and August are best for wildflowers and a full lake. Winter trips are gorgeous but require extra distance and snowshoes.
Why it’s perfect: You get a variety of views without a strenuous hike, so your gallery looks like multiple locations! (This is also where Ethan proposed to me!)
