Matt & Bella's Dream Lake Proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park

ESTES PARK, CO · SUMMER 2026 · PROPOSAL + ENGAGEMENT

A couple sits on the lake shore of Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park during an engagement photoshoot.

Matt and Bella met in college and have been together ever since. So when Matt reached out to me months ago, he already knew exactly where he wanted to ask the question: Dream Lake, in Rocky Mountain National Park. Hiking is much more Bella's thing than his, which made the choice even sweeter. He knew that meeting her on her terms, on a trail, with one of the most beautiful alpine views in Colorado as the backdrop, would make the moment unforgettable.

He planned the whole trip around it. And then, as these things go, the mountains had a few plans of their own.

The plan, and the sunrise pivot

We'd originally scheduled the hike for around 4 p.m. on a weekday, betting that later in the day would mean thinner crowds at one of RMNP's most popular trails. But the forecast had other ideas: classic Colorado summer afternoon thunderstorms were rolling in, the kind you don't gamble with above treeline. So we pivoted to a sunrise hike instead.

Sunrise at Dream Lake is usually the quietest, most magical window you can ask for, soft light on Hallett Peak, still water, and hardly another soul around. (It's exactly the timing I recommend in our Dream Lake guide, proposal or not.) That was the plan, anyway.

A small wrinkle: three busloads of teenagers

When I arrived at the trailhead just outside Estes Park, I found something I did not expect at sunrise: three busloads of teenagers, staging for a leadership tour. A little part of me panicked. This was supposed to be a private moment, and the trail was suddenly very much not private. But I headed up anyway to get into position before Matt and Bella arrived.

Sure enough, just before the couple got there, a group of the teenagers descended right onto the spot I'd picked. I let them have their moment at the lake, and then it hit me: instead of worrying about them, I could get them on my side. I pulled the group leader aside, quietly told him a proposal was about to happen, and, bless him, he gently herded the whole group further up the trail.

The moment

It went off without a hitch. By the time Matt and Bella reached the lake, we had the site to ourselves, and I was in position to capture the exact moment he asked. She said yes, of course.

And then, the second they embraced, a cheer went up from across the water. It turned out the teenagers hadn't gone far at all, they'd found a hidden vantage point on the other side of the lake and watched the whole thing unfold. We all just laughed. There's something pretty perfect about a private proposal that ends with a crowd of strangers celebrating right along with you.

Down the trail for the engagement session

With the big question answered, we took our time on the way down, stopping at all the beautiful spots the Dream Lake trail is famous for: the forested switchbacks, the overlook, the little footbridge, and the quieter water of Nymph Lake. (If you're curious about each of those stops, our Dream Lake guide walks the whole trail.)

When we reached the bottom, Matt and Bella changed into some nicer clothes, and we wrapped with a set of more elegant engagement photos, the polished bookend to a morning that started with hiking boots and a very well-kept secret.

A Dream Lake morning they'll never forget

This is exactly why couples love a Dream Lake proposal: the setting does so much of the work, and the mountains have a way of turning even the unexpected, a storm in the forecast, a few hundred teenagers, into part of the story. Matt planned it for Bella, on a trail that means something to her, and the day delivered in every way, cheering audience included.

From the Couple Themselves

“We couldn't have asked for a better photographer than Jillian! From the very beginning, she was incredibly kind, professional, and responsive. She was flexible throughout the planning process and made everything feel easy and stress-free.

On the day of the proposal, Jillian went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. She arrived well before we did, found the perfect spot to stay hidden in plain sight, and even kindly asked other hikers to keep moving along the trail so the proposal area wouldn’t be crowded. Because of her thoughtfulness, we were able to have such a private and intimate moment, and that meant the world to us.

Not only was the quality of her work outstanding, but she also got our photos back much quicker than we expected. It was so exciting to be able to relive the moment so soon after the proposal. It was clear how dedicated she is to photography and making sure everything goes perfectly.

We definitely got our money's worth, and every photo is something we'll treasure forever. If you're looking for someone who is talented, reliable, and genuinely cares about giving you an incredible experience, I can't recommend Jillian enough. Thank you for helping us preserve such a special memory!”
